The film: In the Shadow of Women / L’Ombre des Femmes (France)
What's it about? "The film is about a couple living in Paris. It's shot in black and white and centres on the sadness of their marriage. The lack of emotion in the husband is stunning because he literally has an affair and he plays both his wife and lover. He honestly believes that women shouldn't have other lovers -- only men can. I would say he's totally void of emotion until about two-thirds of the film when he discovers that his wife is also having an affair. Of course, he can't accept that. She's a woman. It's really interesting. When the man was emotionless during the film, the director shows Paris as drab, but when the character begins to show a little bit of emotion, Paris is seen as warmer...nicer. Just like the Paris we would expect."
Did you like it?
"I like the black and white cinematography. The acting was excellent because it's not easy to play a character without emotion. So although you don't really like the husband, you can certainly appreciate him as an actor. He was very good. I really like French film. I love walking out of the theatre and talking to people like you about film. That's the beauty of TIFF."
