Maria

Maria: The Man Repeller inspires me. She dresses for herself. She doesn't care about what anybody thinks. That's what fashion should be all about.

TorontoVerve: What's the best advice you've received in life?

Maria: My dad told me to always take my time if I want to do something right. That helps me focus on what I'm doing.

Simone

Simone: I get fashion inspiration from social media. I love model Slick Woods' style. I've never seen anything like it.

TorontoVerve: What's the best advice you've received in life?

Simone: My mom told me, "never regret anything because if you're happy, then every single choice you've ever made has brought you to where you are." Her advice has helped me look forward instead of dwelling in the past.

Derek

Derek: Most of the time I dress very monochromatic. My style is just really my own. It's from years and years of experimenting and what not. I would describe it as 'Street Parisian.'

TorontoVerve: What are you most proud of in life?

Derek: What I'm most proud of? That's huge. I think it changes daily. I'm proud of who I am and who I continue to develop being. I guess I'm proud of my journey to becoming me.

We previously captured Derek's street style four years ago.

Patrick

Patrick: "I'm trying to look kinda dressy and summery today. It's beautiful outside."

TorontoVerve: "Is there anyone in particular who inspires your style?"

Patrick: "Um, I find that a lot of people…or at least the way that I look at it…a lot of people judge me on being black. I feel like all they see is gangster so I'm trying to change that. When you dress nicely, people treat you better."

TorontoVerve: "That's sad. Do you think it's sad that you feel that way?"

Patrick: "Not sad. I grew up with white parents also. I worked at the Gap when I was younger so I always knew how to dress appropriately. Yes, it's pretty depressing that I can't dress anyway that I want because I get judged on it basically. I remember when I was in grade 11, I used to get pulled over by the police if I wore a baggy t-shirt and shorts. But when I walk down the street like this, they ask, 'how are you doing, sir?' There's actually a big difference. It's surprising. I want to change the stereotype. A lot of people think that black people are what they see portrayed on TV, in the movies or on the internet: gangsters who sell drugs and do bad things. But really, I have a great job and work 40 hours a week and I don't do drugs or anything like that."

TorontoVerve: "So what are the flowers for?"

Patrick: "I'm going on a date tonight. The flowers are a nice added touch. Every girl should get flowers."

TorontoVerve: "What's your favourite memory in life?"

Patrick: "I have a photography company and we run a charity. Once every 2 weeks, my friends and I all pitch in to buy a bunch of toothbrushes, socks and deodorant and we walk around downtown and hand them out to homeless people. Their happy faces are definitely memorable to me."

Keon: "Dark Prep"

"My style can be described as 'dark prep'. I love designer Rick Owens' dark designs. His collections always inspires me. I love the fact that he walks out on the runway at the end of the show in jeans and a t-shirt and looks like one of the models -- not a designer. He really lives his brand. Kanye West inspires me too.  As a rapper, he went on stage wearing a leather kilt. That's pushing the bar right there and that's something I always did as a kid -- pushing the bars as a black man."

"I like taking things from different genres and mixing them together -- so I would describe my style as 'bohemian prep.' Lady Gaga often inspires me to be creative."

The Sound of Kiva

Asking to photograph someone at a crowded streetcar stop is like pouring hot sauce on a paper cut.  That's because rejection in front of a captive audience stings hard.  Fortunately for me, Kiva said yes and spared me the embarrassment.

Kiva is a PR professional and film blogger.  Check out her latest reviews at diegetic sound.

Jonas: True Colours

For a long time, Jonas felt that he needed a new style. So as a landscaping businessman, he did what made sense to him. He took the logic of Andrew Lawson's The Gardener's Book of Color and applied it to his wardrobe. The result is a captivating palette that breaks the monotony of the often somber fall look. His inspiration, Scott Schuman, would be proud.

Jonas shops often at Value Village and Theodore 1922.
