Aimee & Rhys: 1950s Housewife Style

Aimee (Left): "My style right now is everything from her closet. She's literally dressing me. I just came from Orlando, Florida so my wardrobe consists of shorts and t-shirts. Her fashion is very 1950's housewife A-line skirts. It's very elegant -- all to do with the womanly shape. She owns no pants at all. What we're wearing today is very colourful -- like the muppets. It's fun."

Rhys (Right): "I like to be cozy, but not yoga pants and sweats cozy. I prefer a lot of natural materials like cotton and linen -- particularly A-liner pencil skirts from the 50s and 60s. I don't wear flat shoes. I buy some of my clothes from Anthropologie and the rest from Modcloth -- a vintage-inspired clothing website."

Roy & Mari

Roy: "Whatever's on the floor that's not dirty is basically my style. I have a man-crush on Johnny Depp. His style inspires me. He's still suave and awesome at age 50."

Mari: "My style is sorta edgy. Although I have many influences, I'm my own person."

"I'm kinda gothic. I don't want to say it, but Miley Cyrus influences my style a little. I like her big platform boots, necklaces and bracelets."

"My style is generally whatever I find on the floor. Michael Jackson and my grandmother always inspire my style. If I fuse both of them together then I usually get something that I like. Keon: "Dark Prep"

"My style can be described as 'dark prep'. I love designer Rick Owens' dark designs. His collections always inspires me. I love the fact that he walks out on the runway at the end of the show in jeans and a t-shirt and looks like one of the models -- not a designer. He really lives his brand. Kanye West inspires me too.  As a rapper, he went on stage wearing a leather kilt. That's pushing the bar right there and that's something I always did as a kid -- pushing the bars as a black man."

Shahrokh Moshkin-Ghalam

Iranian actor and dancer Shahrokh Moshkin-Ghalam was the star attraction at Toronto's recent Tirgan festival. The multi-talented artist impressively sold out all 3 performances of the festival's presentation of Love Stories of the Shahnameh. 

Just before his debut show, I was fortunate to meet and capture Mr. Moshkin-Ghalam's brilliant style on King Street West. I just loved the boldness of his colourful paisley jacket and dazzling purple vest -- not to mention, his bright blue pants. North American men should dare to wear Mr. Moshkin-Ghalam's flashy colour palette.

Dainty: "Church Woman Gone Bad"

"The best way to describe my style is church woman gone bad. It's the story of my life. Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, Lena Horne and every single old black church lady I've ever known inspire my style."

Dainty and her photographer friend were busy shooting style photos in Kensington Market for Heatbeats, a blog that celebrates people of colour and fashion.

Sidney

"My style is a little strange -- kinda artsy and very athletic. I bike everywhere. I love hanging out in parks. My dream one day would be to live in an enchanted forest with fairies and unicorns because I love nature and sometimes I get sick of the city."

"I like taking things from different genres and mixing them together -- so I would describe my style as 'bohemian prep.' Lady Gaga often inspires me to be creative."

"I lived in England for a little while so my style is a mixture of European and North American. My inspiration in the design world is Marc Jacobs. Although I've never owned any of his styles, I can totally see myself wearing them. He captures the essence of the independent woman. Also, my mom inspires me because she used to be a fashion designer during the 60's in China. When I see old photographs of her I think she looks really cool. I bought this dress from a chain store in England called Next. It's not vintage but vintage-inspired."

Mariko: "90's Punk Tribal"

"My style today is sorta 90's punk tribal. My inspiration is Japanese street style and pilgrims. It's a weird combination. Japanese street style puts anything together and it kinda works, and I really enjoy the classicness of what pilgrims wear."

"People call me a hipster, but I don't think that fits. I mostly shop at vintage and thrift stores because I think that there were more interesting fabrics back then. I really like the high-waisted look."
